News + A Nightmare on Elm St : Movie Review

Hello viewers of RewoundEntertaiment! Its Brandon, a.k.a. Vintagebro. I haven't made a post in a long time, so with our site growing and now becoming its own " .com ", I thought I would mention I am currently working on drawing up a new site banner, ad banners and working on updating the overall look of the site. So be sure to check up on the site for new reviews and a new look!
Now, onto the movie review. I recently watched " A Nightmare on Elm Street " which is a remake for the people who don't know there is an original. In fact theres an original 7, as well as "Freddy Vs Jason " , but that's a totally different story. Anyways here's what I saw and my opinion on the remake.

Story: The story starts off quick and gets right to the point. A teenager named Dean keeps falling asleep at a table in a diner and meets a very dark and burnt character, wearing a red and green sweater and welding a glove with razor sharp blades on each finger. The sinister looking character kills Dean in the dream, while before dieing, calling out " your not real! ", in reality it appears that Dean is killing himself in a sleep walking state talking to himself. A young girl named Kris who witnessed Dean " killing himself " then begins having dreams about the same burnt man and refuses to go to sleep for the same reason Dean did, with the fear of dieing in her dreams. She, just as Dean, died a painful death. Kris's ex-boyfriend Jesse was watching her while she slept and then watched her die a horrible death. Panicking, and covered in blood he runs to Nancy's house who is a friend to all the other teenagers that are tied into the story and is also the main Protagonist. Jesse is soon taken to jail for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Jesse then also has a dream of the burnt man and is then brutally killed. As the story progresses Nancy also starts to have the same dreams about this burnt character who we are later told is " Freddy Kruger " . She then beings to learn who he is and what his motivations are. The storyline follows almost the exact same as the original. Minor details differ the movies, but are practically the same. The story really gets into your head and really makes you think, it plays with your imagination just like the first, which I think really gets you into the story. The story has its own feel to it as well as similar themes from the original, so having said that I give the story a 7/10 .

Writing: As I said about the story the writing is very similar. Freddy still has the fear inflicting powers like the original. The way the story is told from start to finish always keeps you hanging on the edge of your seat. The language is a little darker and more vulgar, which I think really adds to the whole feel of the movie. Simply said the writing was well done. Im giving it a 7/10 .

Acting: Jackie Earle Haley, what can I say about him. He really played a great Freddy. For the Language and character Jackie Earle Haley really nails it. He really gets into the character and scares you, inflicts fear and shines the whole movie. Now having said all this, there were sometimes where you really got to see the face of Freddy and the new make-up. The make-up this time around really focuses on making him look like a real burnt victim. Gritty, destroyed and well, burnt. But the make-up seemed to hold his emotions. Threw the whole movie you didnt really see him make an emotion, no anger, no sadness, nothing. It seemed he only really had a straight face but almost angry, but not quite there. Rooney Mara, who plays " Nancy ", seems to get her character down as well. She shows her emotions, the fear, the curiousness, the sadness. From time to time it looked as if she didnt really get into it, such as when Jesse brakes into her room covered in blood. She seems very confused but not freaking out, which if that was me I would be screaming my head off. Kyle Gallner who plays Nancy's boyfriend seemed to lack in his part. He seemed to get into it but never really looked any different. His emotions and his facial expressions never really changed. He always looked like he was, " down on his luck " the whole movie. Even before Freddy appeared. Overall the acting was pretty good. Some actors held the movie to what it is, without Jackie Erale Haley the movie might have been not as well done. Jackie is no Robert Englund, but he does a great job. 6/10 .

Style: The style of the movie was very similar to the originals. I mean you have to give credit to the original, but with the times, comes change and the visual effects, the mood, and feel to the movie were done nicely. The mood and feel of the movie seemed a little more darker, each set were dark and spooky. For example, the boiler room was dark, and so evil looking. The visuals were amazing especially during the scene where Nancy is in the drug store dreaming. The transition from dream to really was absolutly amazing. I wish the did more of it for the intire movie. All in all the movie was very dark and gritty. Overall its a 8/10 .

Overall: Overall the movie lives up to the original. If you haven't seen the original your going to think its amazing and well done. If you've watched the original and are wanting to watch the remake you'll see a lot of things very similar and you may not like it. I really enjoyed watching it and hope they make a remake of the second one. Even if you've seen the first I suggest going and watching it, and if your looking for a nice scare, I seriously suggest going to watch it. When it makes its way to DVD I'll be sure to pick it up and watch it again. Overall the movie gets a 7/10 .
