I find watching Will Ferrell extremely hard to do. His style of humour is somewhat unusual for me, although I know many millions of people enjoy it. I have to admit though that in Land of the Lost, I found him bearable. He actually did quite an impressive job, but I will get to more on that in a minute. First, here's the breakdown of what I believe to be one of the best comedy films of the year.
Story: This film is, if you didn't already know this, based on the 1974 TV Series of the same name. I have never actually watched that show, but that didn't hurt my viewing experience for this film. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) and Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel) are two scientists who, when on a lame Devil's Cave attraction tour to search for tachyons (time warp molecules), get thrown into an alternate universe with their tour guide Will Stanton (Danny R. McBride). From this point on, action ensues as the three "heroes" try to escape this alternate universe while saving their butts from dinosaurs, aliens and other strange monsters. On their journey they meet a strange ape man named Cha-Ka (Jorma Taccone), who adds a nice touch of silent humour. This is the most basic of sci-fi story forms around, but it just works so damn well! 9/10
Writing: The humour is quick, rich and often dirty, but it never falls short. Every joke seems to hit with a smack to the face that tells you to laugh in the most irresponsible way, and it's fun to feel that way. On top of that, there is a perfect blend of action and dialogue that keeps the film flowing at a fast pace and keeps the viewer interested and wanting to hear every word. The writers simply did an outstanding job. 10/10
Acting: Again, Will Ferrell is not my favourite actor in the world, but this is probably the first film he's done that I've found him to be genuinely funny in. The co-stars also do a great job of playing up the fact that Rick Marshall has his stupid and smart moments. I especially liked Cha-Ka. He's so obnoxious, which I find to be a great quality in movie characters (strange, right?). I don't know if the movie would have been as great if it weren't for the hilariously wonderful actors. 9/10
Production: What I loved most about this film is that it looked and felt like an old 70's sci-fi show. The settings were campy and the creatures were wildly amusing and beyond imagination. It's really hard to explain what I'm talking about. You just have to see it to understand. This movie's budget was, wait for it, $100 Million dollars! I have to admit, it all went to good use, at least from what I could see. A lot of critics seem to be pointing their thumbs down for Land of the Lost, but they're all wrong. I'm right. Go see this movie now! 9/10
Overall: As I stated before, this is one of the best comedy films of the year, if not the best. Will Ferrell is actually funny and the style is so campy, it's fantastic. If you like sci-fi or comedy films, this is a must see. I give Land of the Lost a big 9/10!
